Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has paid homage to Soul Train host Don Cornelius, who committed suicide at the age of 75 earlier this week. The alt-rock star says that Cornelius helped shape his musical tastes.

"Sad to hear about the passing of Don Cornelius of Soul Train fame. Grateful to him that he turned me on to so much great music," Corgan wrote via Twitter.

Artists from every corner of the music industry have commented on Cornelius' death including Aretha Franklin. The Queen of Soul issued her sentiments towards the host, noting that he helped bring attention to African American culture on the show.

"It's so sad, stunning and downright shocking. A huge and momentous loss to the African-American community and the world at large. Don Cornelius single handedly brought about a melding and unity of brother and sisterhood among young adults worldwide and globally with the unforgettable creation of Soul Train," she wrote in a statement.
