Woody Allen and Alexander Payne won the top prizes at the Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.

Payne, along with co-screenwriters Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, took home the prize for Best Adapted Screenplay for their family drama "The Descendants," based on the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings. The film stars George Clooney as a man struggling to keep his family together after a boating accident leaves his wife in a coma.

Other winners at the event, which was held in simultaneous ceremonies on the East and West Coasts, included Katie Galloway and Kelly Duane de la Vega (for their documentary screenplay for "Better This World"), "Breaking Bad" (for Best Television Drama), "Modern Family" (for Best Television Comedy), and "Homeland" (for Best Television New Series).
