Russia has backed the appointment of former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan as the U.N.-Arab League special envoy to Syria to find a solution to the crisis in that Middle East country.
"We expect that the activity of this authoritative politician will contribute to solving the pressing political and humanitarian issues in Syria on the basis of work with all parties in the interest of peace through inclusive political dialog between the Syrian government and the Opposition," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in Moscow on Friday.
"Russia is ready for close cooperation with him in the search for mutually acceptable solutions to these issues," Lukashevich was quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency as saying.
Joined by China, Russia had vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution that sought to condemn the the brutal suppression of the uprising against the Bashar al-Assad government in that Arab country where more than 5,000 people were killed since the unrest began a year ago.
