At least six people were killed and seven injured when a car bomb exploded at the Jalalabad airport in eastern Afghanistan on Monday, reports quoting police said.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack which was carried out by a suicide-bomber at the entrance of the airport where NATO forces have a base. Police suspect that the victims were civilians. There were also no reports about the blast causing any damage to NATO installations.
The attack comes after at least 30 people were killed in violent protests by Afghans against the burning of copies of the Holy Koran at a U.S. military base in the war-torn country. Seven U.S. soldiers were reportedly wounded in a grenade attack on their base in northern Kunduz province on Sunday.
President Hamid Karzai, who condemned the Koran burning went on television on Sunday appealing his countrymen for calm. He said he respected sentiments of the Afghans over the despicable event, but urged them not to let "the enemies of Afghanistan misuse their feelings." The Taliban has called the Afghans to attack foreign troops over the incident that took place in the Bagram airport north of the Afghan capital Kabul.
