Taliban Leaders Killed, Detained In Joint Raid In Afghanistan

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has reported the killings and arrests of a number of Taliban leaders in Afghanistan.

Most of them were arrested in a joint Afghan-coalition forces operation in Maidan Shahr district of the eastern province of Wardak on Friday, ISAF said in an operational update.

Two of them planned and carried out attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the district along Highway-2, including an attack in January against a convoy that left three Afghan National Army Soldiers wounded.

The other leaders provided weapons and ammunition to a cell of insurgents that planted roadside bombs and direct fire attacks in the district.

Separately, a joint force captured a Taliban leader and one of his associates during an operation in Lashkar Gah district in the southern province of Helmand on Friday. The militant chief conducted roadside bombings and other attacks against Afghan civilians and security forces throughout central Helmand province.

In Marjah district, also in Helmand, security forces detained suspected insurgents during an operation in search of a Taliban leader who directs attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Nad 'Ali district and supplies insurgents with weapons and equipment.

In the East, an Afghan Provincial Response Company supported by coalition mentors killed three insurgents while responding to an attack against an agricultural business development team in Alisheng district, Laghman province. The team struck an improvised explosive device while traveling to undertake key infrastructure projects in the area. Shortly after, insurgents opened fire at the team, but PRC deployed to the scene gunned down three of them and forcing the rest to flee.

In Bak district of Khost province, an Afghan led security force captured a Haqqani leader who directed roadside bomb attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout the Terayzai and Bak districts. One suspected insurgent was detained and multiple mortar rounds and explosive devices were seized in the operation.
