Bay Street stocks opened lower Wednesday amid selling in metal stocks, with the S&P/TSX Composite Index losing 42.47 points or 0.34 percent to 12,495.22.
Gold stocks suffered the most, dragging the Global Gold Index 2 percent down. Barrick Gold (ABX.TO), Goldcorp. (G.TO) and Detour Gold (DGC.TO) were down close to 3 percent each.
Among silver producers, Pan American Silver (PAA.TO) and First Majestic Silver (FR.TO) were down close to 2 percent each.
In the oil patch, Suncor Energy (SU.TO), Baytex Energy Corp. (BTE.TO) and Bonterra Energy (BNE.TO) shed over 1 percent each.
Toy maker MEGA Brands (MB.TO) dived 11 percent after reporting a sharply lower fourth quarter net profit
Meanwhile, independent power producer Capital Power Corp. (CPX.TO) edged up nearly 1 percent after reporting improved fourth-quarter funds from operations.
