Bulgarian Unemployment Rate Rises In 2011

Bulgaria's unemployment rate increased in 2011, data released by the National Institute of Statistics showed Friday.

The unemployment rate increased to 11.2 percent in 2011 from 10.2 percent in the previous year. The jobless rate among youth, aged between 15 and 24, rose to 26.6 percent from 23.2 percent. Long-term unemployment rate, which refers to those unemployed for one year and more, increased to 6.3 percent during the year from 4.8 percent in 2010.

The number of jobless persons climbed to around 372,300 last year from 348,000 in the year before. The number of unemployed youth moved up to around 64,900 from 62,500.

Meanwhile, the employment rate for the year decreased to 45.6 percent from 46.7 percent in the previous year. The number of employed persons dropped to around 2.95 million from 3.05 million in the previous year, the agency said.
