Damon Albarn has released a trailer for his upcoming studio album, Dr. Dee, which is based on an opera he composed of the same name.

The trailer features snippets of the song "Apple Carts" along with Albarn discussing the album's recording.

"It's very deep and emotional music, and it's kind of a magical but also quite mysterious subject matter," conductor André de Ridder says in the trailer.

According to a press release, the album "is an 18-track work inspired by the life of John Dee (1527-1608), mathematician, alchemist, philosopher and advisor to Elizabeth I."

As for the LP's sound, the release continues: "Albarn's voice [is paired] with early English choral and instrumentation alongside modern, West African and Renaissance sounds."

Dr. Dee is due to be released on May 7.
