The Israeli Parliament has passed a groundbreaking new law that will ban the use of ultra-skinny models in advertising. The measure was proposed as a way to promote healthy ideas about body image and curb the nations growing problem with eating disorders.
According to the Huffington Post, all models working in the Isreali advertising industry will now be required to produce documentation no more than three weeks old that certifies that their height and weight are within the advised proportions specified by the World Health Organization.
The new law is gaining praise from eating disorder experts around the world, including Duke University's Cynthia M. Bulik, who spoke with the Los Angeles Times:
"The visual effect is so powerful and such a dangerous lure for girls and women who feel like they have to match this societal thin ideal."
