A fishing vessel from Japan, swept away by the tsunami that struck the Asian country in March 2011, was spotted off the west coast of Canada, BBC reported.

The vessel, believed to be empty, was seen drifting off 275 km from the Haida Gwaii islands. The boat is expected to drift slowly towards the south. It is under the surveillance of Canada's transport ministry.

The tsunami had generated over 25 million tonnes of debris. The Japanese fishing vessel could be the first large-sized debris from the natural disaster to cross the Pacific.
