Jimmy Kimmel will host the 2012 Emmy awards on September 23 in Los Angeles. It is the first time that the "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" host has emceed the ceremony.
The event airs on ABC, and, as a rep told the Los Angeles Times, it will be "fast-paced" and "irreverent":
"We love television and look forward to working with the Television Academy and ABC in creating a show that is fast-paced, humorous, unpredictable and at times irreverent, but clearly celebratory of our incredible industry."
Kimmel quipped that he "hope[s] to be able to do for the Emmys this year what Eddie Murphy did for the Oscars."
Other late night funnymen who have hosted the program include David Letterman, Jay Leno, Conan Obrien and Jon Stewart.
Kimmel is also hosting next month's White House Correspondents' Dinner.
