At least 40 suspected al-Qaeda militants were killed as the Yemeni Air Force pounded their hideouts in a two-day operation in the country's south, reports quoting officials said on Tuesday.

The air raid and shelling were carried out on targets in Huroor that lies on the crossroads between Lahij and Abyan provinces where the global terror network has a strong presence.

Reports quoting a military official said al-Qaeda militants withdrew from Mallah in Lahij following shelling and air strikes by the Yemeni Air Force with U.S. help. The militants had taken an Army post in the region on Saturday after a fierce battle in which at least 28 soldiers and 12 militants were killed.

The Pentagon is reported to have provided military hardware to Yemen's Special Forces to fight al-Qaeda which has fortified bases in the relatively lawless country on the southern tip of the Arabian peninsula.
