The Miss Universe Canada competition may allow a transgender participant after all. Last week it was ruled that Jenna Talackova would be disqualified from the event since she was not a "naturally born" woman and had allegedly lied on her application forms.
The ruling drew outcries from the LGBT community and now the Miss Universe Organization says Talackova will be allowed to participate if she can prove legally that she is a woman. This could require furnishing the organization with documents from a physician.
"The Miss Universe Organization should look to state non-discrimination laws and institutions including the Olympics, NCAA and The CW's America's Next Top Model, which do not discriminate against transgender women," said a rep from the gay rights organization GLAAD.
Denis Davila, president of the Miss Universe Canada competition broke the news last week saying:
"She feels like a real girl and she is a real girl. She didn't expect people to question it," Davila tells thestar.com. "She was hoping we could put her back in the competition, but the rules are very clear and there's no way we can go back on it."
