Australia Vehicle Sales Rise 3.9% In March

Australia's vehicle sales increased markedly in March, helped by higher sales of sport utility vehicles (SUVs), data released by the the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) showed Wednesday.

Overall vehicle sales increased 3.9 percent on an annual basis to 97,616 units in March.

In the three months ended March, total vehicle sales advanced 4.7 percent from the corresponding period a year earlier. Sales of locally manufactured vehicles rose around 20 percent during the period.

All categories of SUVs recorded sharp growth in sales. Among passenger cars, sales of medium passengers cars climbed 17.7 percent annually, while sales of sports cars jumped 31.2 percent.

"SUVs continue to dominate Australian car sales, accounting for 28 per cent of all new car sales so far this year," FCAI chief Executive Ian Chalmers said. "Combined with small passenger cars (23.6 per cent) and light passenger cars (13.0 per cent), these three segments make up 64.6 per cent of new cars sold this year."
