At least three people were killed and scores injured as strong winds lashed Japan on Tuesday, and the Meteorological Agency warned people including commuters in Tokyo to brace for gusts and possible disruptions of public transport on Wednesday also.
The deaths were reported from Toyama, Mitoyo and Oshu while most of the injured were from the western prefectures.
The winds disrupted operations of flights and trains, including Shinkansen (high speed bullet trains). An active low pressure is likely to bring strong winds to northern and north-eastern Japan on Wednesday, the Kyodo news agency reported quoting the the Meteorological Agency.
The Japan Airlines said it canceled 219 flights, including almost all those due to depart from or arrive at Tokyo's Haneda airport from 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The All Nippon Airways suspended 320 flights, including those due to depart from and arrive at Haneda and airports in Osaka.
The East Japan Railway Co. said it had suspended operation of Narita Express trains linking central Tokyo with Narita International Airport.
Gusts of 137.5 kph were recorded at Mount Aso, a volcano in Kumamoto prefecture, while winds of 123.5 kph were logged at Cape Muroto in Kochi prefecture. Heavy rains hit some parts of western and south-western Japan. The Meteorological Agency warned of gusts exceeding 100 kph across wide stretches of Japan, including Tokyo and its vicinity on Wednesday.
The storm triggered power outages affecting around 11,500 households in Toyama and Ishikawa prefectures, according to the Hokuriku Electric Power Co.
