The national weather service says at least four twisters touched down in North Texas yesterday, leaving a trail of destruction in their path.
"We're still assessing the situation. The Dallas-Fort Worth area really dodged a bullet," Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said on CNN. "Hundreds and hundreds of homes destroyed, only three people taken to the hospital; we're looking at something of a miracle, it really is amazing." The weather sirens began wailing around noon as severe storms headed toward Fort Worth then continued east. For approximately four to five hours, residents of North Texas took cover as winds of over 100 miles an hour blasted through the area, leaving drivers on highways searching for cover. National Weather Service Meteorologist Amber Elliott said the metroplex usually gets at least one, big violent storm system each spring, but Tuesday's tornadoes that tossed 18-wheelers in the air and peeled away roof tops seemed bigger than usual.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that more than 100 homes in Arlington, Texas, about 50 homes and five businesses in Kennedale and 300 homes and businesses in hard-hit Lancaster, east of Dallas, were significantly damaged, according to preliminary reports.
At DFW airport, more than 100 planes incurred damage from hail, while airlines canceled more than 450 departures at DFW and Love Field. The Red Cross estimated that 650 homes were damaged. Around 150 Lancaster residents stayed in a shelter Tuesday night.
In a press conference, Lancaster Mayor Marcus Knight said 300 structures were damaged within the city and that "multiple" injuries have been reported. He said there have not yet been any fatalities. "I guess 'shock' is probably a good word," Lancaster Mayor Marcus Knight said, referring to the mood of residents. Damage costs in North Texas are expected to rise into the millions of dollars, while injury numbers appear to be holding steady.
