The FDA has found another counterfeit version of the popular cancer drug Avastin in the U.S. The fake drug, packaged as Altuzan, a Turkish knock-off, does not contain the active ingredient necessary to make the drug effective.
"Patients receiving cancer drugs or other drugs not approved by the FDA for the U.S. market may not be receiving needed therapy," the agency announced after performing the requisite lab tests.
A distributor, Richards Pharma (a.k.a. Richards Services, Warwick Healthcare Solutions and Ban Dune Marketing, Inc.), has been named as the source of the imitation medicine. The FDA added that several doctors offices had purchased the fake, but did not announce the names of the practitioners.
In January, two Californians, James Newcomb (founder, owner and president of Ban Dune) and Sandra Behe, were indicted by federal prosecutors on charges of selling another non-FDA approved cancer medication.
