Confirming recent rumors, Google Inc. (GOOG: Quote) officially revealed some details of Project Glass - its digitized headgear, alternatively referred to as 'augmented reality' glasses.

The technology titan posted a small video of the device at its Google Plus social network, inviting viewers' suggestions. The related images feature people wearing eyeglasses with silver frames that include cameras and on-lens displays.

The video suggests that the headwear performs the same tasks as a smartphone — real time weather, directions/maps, photography and video chat — with the catch that the information is displayed directly in one's field of vision.

"We think technology should work for you-to be there when you need it and get out of your way when you don't," read an accompanying post by the project team.

The short clip shows one user wearing the glasses chat with friends, fix appointments, navigate through busy lanes and know the weather, with popping alerts and superimposing images displaying on the lens. There are built-in microphones so that the wearer can communicate over the internet-linked glasses.

"We started Project Glass to build this kind of technology, one that helps you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment," the team says.

The New York Times had reported in February that Google is working on such a product, which would be available later in 2012, retailing at $250 to $500. However, no such details were revealed in the recent post.

GOOG closed on Wednesday at $635.15, down from the prior close of $642.62, on a volume of 1.63 million shares.
