Chile's annual inflation eased to the lowest level in five months in March, data released by the National Statistics Institute of Chile showed Thursday.
The consumer price index increased 3.8 percent on an annual basis in March, markedly slower than the 4.4 percent growth seen in February. The latest growth was the slowest since October 2011, when prices gained 3.7 percent. Economists were looking for an inflation rate of 4.1 percent in March.
Food and non-alcoholic beverages prices climbed 9.8 percent year-on-year, while clothing and footwear prices decreased 4.5 percent. There was a 1.6 percent annual growth in housing costs and utility prices during the month, and a 3.8 percent rise in transportation costs.
On a monthly basis, consumer prices moved up 0.2 percent in March, faster than the previous month's 0.4 percent increase. Economists expected prices to rise 0.5 percent month-on-month.
