Google has released official information Wednesday on Project Glass, its digitized headgear which have been alternately referred to as "augmented reality" glasses.

The headwear performs the same tasks as a smartphone—real time weather, directions/maps, photography and video chat—with the catch that the information is displayed directly in one's field of vision.

"We're sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input . . . Please follow along as we share some of our ideas and stories. We'd love to hear yours, too. What would you like to see from Project Glass?," Google wrote via their Google Plus site.

In February, the New York Times suggested that the glasses would be available later in the year, retailing for $25 to $500; it is not clear whether a late 2012 release is targeted.
