Hungary's trade surplus for February declined from the same month last year and came in below economists' forecast, preliminary data released by the Central Statistical Office revealed Friday.

Merchandise trade surplus dropped to EUR 690.1 million from EUR 860.2 million in the year-ago period. Economists had expected a figure of EUR 797.4 million. In January, the country recorded an excess of EUR 419 million compared to EUR 432.1 million a year ago.

Exports dropped 3.2 percent year-on-year, while imports grew 1.5 percent.

In the January-February period, Hungary logged a surplus of EUR 1.109 billion, which was less than last year's EUR 1.292 billion excess. Exports increased 0.4 percent and imports rose 2.1 percent.
