The Parliamentary Committee on National Security, working on a consensus report on new terms of engagement with the United States, has suffered yet another setback when the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam - Fazl (JUI-F) decided to dissociate from the Committee.
JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman told reporters on Friday that the government had already decided to reopen supply routes for NATO forces through Pakistan. "It was not possible for me to attend the Committee meetings," Pak media quoted him as saying.
Earlier on Friday, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan warned that he would quit his office if the supply routes were reopened.
The Pakistan Mulsim League-Nawaz (PML-N) veteran said he had made his stance clear to his party and leaders of other parties in the Opposition about not resuming supply to NATO forces in neighboring Afganistan. He urged the Opposition leaders to take all the stake holders in confidence before taking any decision in this regard.
Pakistan closed two main NATO supply routes into Afghanistan in the wake of the killings of 24 of its soldiers in NATO strikes against two military posts at the north-western border with Afghanistan in November last. NATO forces used to receive roughly 40 percent of their supplies through these routes which run through the Khyber Pass.
Pakistan had also taken back the Shamsi Air Base in the country's west, which the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had been using for drone operations in protest against the killings.
