Reports: US Navy Jet Crashes In Virginia Beach

A US Navy jet has crashed in a residential area in Virginia Beach, Virginia, media reports citing officials said Friday.

The U.S. Navy F/A-18 Hornet reportedly crashed into an apartment complex in a residential area of Virginia Beach shortly after take-off from the nearby Oceana Naval Air Station.

The jet's two pilots had ejected from the plane before it crashed. According to the local media, the two pilots have been rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately known.

Although there were no immediate reports of civilian casualties in the accident, local residents indicated that one person on the ground was taken to hospital to receive treatment for smoke inhalation.

The jet involved in the crash was with Strike Fighter Squadron 106, also known as the Gladiators, stationed at Virginia's Naval Air Station Oceana. The cause of crash is not yet known.

Some reports said the jet crashed into the Mayfair Mews Apartment complex in Virginia Beach after emptying its fuel. Those claims are yet to be confirmed.

"We are taking all possible steps at the state level to provide immediate resources and assistance to those impacted by the crash of an F-18 fighter jet in Virginia Beach," Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell said in a statement.

"We are monitoring events carefully as they unfold and State Police resources are now on the scene. Our fervent prayer is that no one was injured or killed in this accident," he added.
