Deftones are heading to the studio to record a new album in July, according to frontman Chico Moreno.

Speaking with Chilean website Latercera.com, Moreno said the band continues to grow and improve:

"I'm very enthusiastic, because it sounds futuristic in comparison to our last one, so it feels like a step forward. The songs are very different from each other, not heavier or slower, but more dynamic, going towards several directions; it's heavy, but beautiful."

He added that Chi Cheng, the Tones' hospitalized bassist, who was hospitalized in 2008, is still fighting to recover:

"Every day is different, and he keeps on fighting. It's been three years already, and he's making small advancements, daily, but he can't speak or communicate . . . no doctor can predict when he's going to wake up."

The band began writing their seventh studio effort and follow-up to 2010's Diamond Eyes in late March.
