U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday condemned the killing of innocent civilians by Syrian forces while fighting rebels, and urged the government to uphold its commitment to stop military operations in populated areas, reports said.

At least 27 persons, including Syrian troopers, rebels and civilians, died on Friday as the military intensified its operations. The latest clashes came four days before the deadline agreed by President Bashar al-Assad to end use of heavy weapons and withdraw troops.

The United Nations Security Council on Thursday announced its support to the April-10 deadline set by a six-point peace plan proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan. According to the peace plan, the Syrian government is required to pull back its troops and heavy weaponry from towns and cities by April 10 and enforce a full ceasefire within the next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, Syrians in large numbers entered Turkey for the second day amid fierce shelling and large-scale destruction, prompting the Turkish Government to seek the United Nation's intervention to solve the issue.
