At least one hundred Pakistani soldiers were reportedly buried by a massive avalanche in the Siachen glacier in northern Kashmir. The incident occurred when the avalanche smashed into an army base situated in the disputed Himalayan region.
Rescue operations are progressing at the battalion headquarters at Gayari which was engulfed by snow after being hit by the avalanche in the early hours of Saturday, a Pakistani official is quoted to have said.
Pakistan an India have deployed thousands of troopers in Siachen, which is known as the highest battlefield in the world. The Kashmir region is claimed by both India and Pakistan.
