Attacks in Syria is continuing, as deadline agreed by President Bashar al-Assad to end use of heavy weapons and withdraw troops is nearing, reports said Saturday.
It is said that nearly 27 people have been killed in renewed fighting, when Syrian government forces attacked Latamneh, a suburb of Hama. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday condemned the killing of innocent civilians by Syrian forces while fighting rebels, and urged the government to uphold its commitment to stop military operations in populated areas.
The United Nations Security Council on Thursday announced its support to the April-10 deadline set by a six-point peace plan proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.
Ban Ki-moon was quoted as saying, "The April 10 timeline to fulfill the government's implementation of its commitments, as endorsed by the Security Council, is not an excuse for continued killing."
At least 27 persons, including Syrian troopers, rebels and civilians, died on Friday as the military intensified its operations.
Meanwhile, bordering state Turkey may seek UN help as it sees an increase in refugee arrivals. It is reportedly said that the rate of refugee arrivals had doubled since Assad agreed to implement the peace plan from the UN and the Arab League.
