Sen. Lugar Attacked From The Right Ahead Of GOP Primary

Six-term incumbent Sen. Dick Lugar, R-Ind., is under attack from conservative groups, jeopardizing his re-election.

The National Rifle Association and the Club of Growth are both launching ads against Lugar, labeling him as a Washington insider, and supporting his primary challenger, Indiana state Treasurer Richard Mourdock.

Both ads will be broadcast statewide on television as well as radio and cable beginning on the same day that early voting for the May 8 primary starts, according to The Hill.

A recent Howey/DePauw Indiana Battleground Poll showed Lugar leading Mourdock by just 42 percent to 35 percent in the primary.

The poll numbers are too close for a veteran senator's comfort, putting Lugar in dangerous territory of potentially losing his re-election bid.

The NRA's ad noted that Lugar is the only Republican candidate in Indiana with an 'F' rating from the gun rights group.

"This time, Indiana Republicans have a choice for Senate," the Club for Growth's ad says. "Dick Lugar: 35 years in Washington. Voted for bailouts, tax hikes and Obama's Supreme Court justices — or Richard Mourdock, a leader in the fight against bailouts and ObamaCare, a fighter for a balanced budget and less debt."
