Consumer price inflation in the Czech Republic accelerated at a slower than expected rate in March, data released by the statistical office showed Tuesday.

Inflation quickened to 3.8 percent in March from 3.7 percent in February. Economists were looking for an inflation rate of 3.9 percent.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages prices rose 1.3 percent annually, while clothing and footwear prices edged down 0.1 percent. There was a 1.6 percent year-on-year increase in housing costs and utility prices during the month, and a 0.4 percent gain in prices in the transportation sector.

Month-on-month, consumer prices moved up 0.2 percent during the month, slower than the 0.3 percent rise economists forecast.
