Turkish police safely defused a bomb left in a package outside the Istanbul Governor's office on Tuesday, the fourth one to be found in the metropolis in the past week.
Bomb disposal units were summoned after a suspicious package was found in front of the office building located in the Fatih district. The package was safely defused after the area was cordoned off. Security around the Governor's office was tightened after the incident, Turkish media reports said.
A bomb placed in a garbage can inside the Gaziosmanpasa District Governor's office in Istanbul exploded on April 2, injuring two people. The explosion in Gaziosmanpasa came hours after police defused a bomb found in a bag near the entrance of the Swissôtel in Besiktas, on one of Istanbul's busiest streets.
Police suspect the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) behind the bombs. The outlawed PKK has been fighting for autonomy in Turkey's mainly Kurdish south-east since 1984 in which thousands have been killed.
