The Broadway production of Disney's "The Lion King" has surpassed Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera" as the most successful musical of all time. The show, which opened in 1997, has grossed nearly $854 million worldwide, edging the $853 million of "Phantom."
The show was directed by Julie Taymor, who has in recent months become embroiled in a lawsuit with her former producers of the show "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark." Taymor gave the show it's signature look using innovative costumes and puppetry.
We're humbled by this milestone, a feat that can be explained in two words: Julie Taymor," Thomas Schumacher, producer and president of Disney Theatrical Productions, said in a statement.
"Her vision, continued commitment to the show and uncommon artistry account for this extraordinary success."
