Ireland Consumer Sentiment Strengthens In March

Irish consumer confidence rose to 60.6 in March from 57.0 in February, a survey by KBC Bank Ireland/ESRI revealed Wednesday.

"The small improvement in consumer sentiment in March suggests that although conditions remain very difficult, there are tentative signs of improvement in some areas of the Irish economy," said Austin Hughes, KBC Bank Ireland.

While outlook for the future improved, consumers have become more worried about their present conditions since the start of the year. Over recent months, there was a marked decline in the volatility of the index.

"Consumer Sentiment, although remaining cautious, has been steadily increasing so far this year, with less pessimism regarding employment prospects and the outlook for the economy driving the improvement," said Cormac O'Sullivan, ESRI.
