Just days after news of their $1 billion buyout by Facebook, Instagram has taken over as the top free app on Apple's iTunes Store. The photo processing app edged out rising free game Draw Something as well as Kick The Boss and Bike Race Free.
Instagram broke the news in an update to their official Twitter feed, noting: "Instagram is #1 in the @AppStore for the first time ever! Thanks everyone! http://instagr.am/p/JQZkiGhQV9/"
The app's number one rating may quell some fears that users would pull back from the service in light of new terms of service rules that will likely come under the Facebook umbrella. Many users turned to Instagram as an alternative means to share photos, feeling more secure in the smaller company's privacy capabilities.
"I felt comfortable posting blurry shots from a pulsing dance floor at 3 in the morning, and no one ever faulted me for showing them what I ate for lunch — that was the entire point of the service," said Jenna Wortham of the New York Times.
