US Military Helicopter Crashes In Morocco, Two Marines Killed

Two US marines have been killed and two more seriously injured after their helicopter crashed in southern Morocco during a joint military exercise, media reports citing officials said Wednesday.

According to officials, the MV-22 Osprey helicoptor crashed near a a military training area in the southern province of Tan Tan shortly after taking off from the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima. The crash happened as the helicopter was participating in a joint US-Morocco military exercise

The two American soldiers injured in the incident have been taken to a military medical facility in Guelmim, some 450 miles south of capital Rabat for emergency medical attention. Media reports speculate them to be in a serious condition.

Officials said further information about the crash as well identities of the soldiers involved in the accident are being withheld until the next of kin of the victims have been notified.

The MV-22 Osprey is hybrid copter that takes off and lands like a helicopter and flies like an airplane. Officials said they have launched an investigation to determine the actual cause of the accident.

Currently, some 1,200 U.S. marines, soldiers, sailors and airmen are in Morocco to participate in the annual "African Lion" joint exercise with their Moroccan counterparts. The main objective of the exercise is to train the forces of both countries to work together.
