The Florida neighborhood watch volunteer who fatally shot a 17-year-old is in custody, charged with second degree murder.

George Zimmerman, 28, was arrested and charged Wednesday with the killing of Trayvon Martin, according to special prosecutor Angela Corey.

"It is the search for justice for Trayvon that has brought us to this moment," Ms. Corey said at a news conference. "We did not come to this decision lightly."

Zimmerman turned himself in, said Ms. Corey, and was being held in an undisclosed location.

Zimmerman claimed he acted in self defense under Florida's so-called "Stand Your Ground" law when he shot the unarmed Martin.

The case sparked a national debate about race and racial profiling.

Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara, told reporters his client would plead not guilty
