Miley Cyrus has been criticized for advocating a gluten free diet. The pop phenom hit Twitter early this week to encourage her fans to try it:
"Everyone should try no gluten for a week! The change in your skin, physical and mental health is amazing. You won't go back!"
However, Rachel Begun, a dietician and food industry consultant, speaking on Today, said that a gluten free diet may not help in weight loss (which Cyrus did not claim):
"People who go gluten-free may gain weight if they rely mostly on highly-processed gluten free foods, many of which tend to be higher in fat, calories and sugar than their gluten-containing counterparts."
Meanwhile, another doctor, Roshini Rajapaksa, said that a gluten free diet should only be tried at the behest of a physician:
"Gluten-free diets are really only prescribed by a doctor for people who have celiac disease," Rajapaksa told HealthPop. "It's the only treatment."
