Two US Coast Guard members have been found shot dead at a communication station inside an air base on Kodiak Island in Alaska Thursday, officials said.

The two victims were reportedly found dead at their work areas inside the airbase by another Coast Guard member. It was not clear if it was a murder-suicide or double homicide. The names of the victims were being withheld until notification of their families.

The Coast Guard said in a statement said the base located about 250 miles southwest of Anchorage and nearby schools were on lock-down "until we can ensure no threat exists." The statement added that FBI agents have been sent to Kodiak from Anchorage to investigate.

"It is possible that the suspect remains at large. Since we don't have all the details, we strongly advise that all Kodiak residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement officials," Capt. Jesse Moore, the base commander, said in a statement.

"We are deeply saddened that we lost two shipmates. This is a rare occurrence and we are going to do everything possible to ensure we find out exactly what happened," he added.

The base, located in the Alaskan island's main town of Kodiak, has about 1,000 Coast Guard personnel and several hundred civilian employees. It serves as a communication base for Coast Guard patrol and search-and-rescue missions in the region. The Kodiak island itself has about 6,300 inhabitants.
