Responding to the political furor over Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen's remarks about Ann Romney's role as a stay-at-home mother, President Barack Obama denounced the comments in an interview with ABC affiliate KCRG on Thursday.
Citing the First Lady Michelle Obama as well as his own mother, Obama suggested that there is "no tougher job than being a mom."
"Anybody who would argue otherwise, I think, probably, needs to rethink their statement," the president added in the interview with KCRG, a television station in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Obama's comments come after Rosen claimed in an appearance on CNN that Ann Romney, the wife of presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney, had "never worked a day in her life."
Rosen has since apologized for her remarks, but Obama went on to suggest that candidates' families should be off limits.
"I don't have a lot of patience for commentary about the spouses of political candidates," Obama said. "My general view is those of us who are in the public life, we're fair game. Our families are civilians."
He added, "I think me and Governor Romney are going to have more than enough to argue about during the course of this campaign."
