Japanese Consumer Sentiment Rises In March

Japan's consumer confidence increased in March, a monthly survey by the Cabinet Office revealed Tuesday.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the consumer confidence index rose to 40.3 in March from a revised reading of 39.9 in February. Economists expected the index to rise to 40 from February's initial reading of 39.5. The January score was also revised to 39.9 from 40.

The indicator for overall livelihood rose to 41.1 from 40.7 in the previous month. The measure for income growth advanced to 39.4 from 39. The employment index was 38.6, up from previous month's 37.9.

The gauge of consumers' willingness to buy durable goods increased marginally to 42.1 from 42.

On an unadjusted basis, the consumer confidence index rose to 40.1 from February's reading of 39.1.
