Japan's population is decreasing alarmingly with the population totaling 127.799 million as on October 1, 2011, the largest-ever drop.

The East Asian country's population decreased by 259,000 people (0.2 percent) from that of the previous year, Japan's public broadcaster NHK reported quoting the Internal Affairs Ministry.

The figure and rate represent the largest-ever drop since comparable data became available in 1950, it said.

Fukushima, the hardest hit prefecture in the March 11, 2011 tsunami and nuclear accident, had the biggest rate of decrease at 1.93 percent, the report said.
