Jonathan Frid, Canadian actor and star of the original television series "Dark Shadows," has died at the age of 87. His death comes weeks before the movie version of the film hits theatres.

He died peacefully of natural causes at a hospital in his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario.

Barnabas Collins, the role Frid was most known for, was a vampire in the daytime gothic soap opera which ran for five years.

The Collins role will be played by Johnny Depp in the Tim Burton reprisal of the series. The latter said he was disappointed by the news:

"It's a sad day. I'm glad I had the opportunity to meet Jonathan on the set this past Spring. He left an indelible impression. Barnabas lives on!"

"Dark Shadows" hits theatres on May 11.
