Italy April Consumer Sentiment Weakens Sharply

Italy's consumer confidence deteriorated notably in April, hurt mainly by increased pessimism among households about the future climate, data from a survey by statistical office Istat showed Monday.

The consumer confidence index dropped sharply to 89 in April from 96.3 in March. In February, the reading was 93.9.

Italian households were more pessimistic about the economic condition in the coming months, with the corresponding indicator falling to 76.6 in April from 86.3 in the previous month.

The indicator that measures consumers' views of the current economic condition decreased to 96.7 from the previous month's reading of 102.6.

The gauge of households' inflation perceptions referring to the past twelve months advanced to 91 in April from 89 in the previous month, while the indicator of their expectations of unemployment rose to 106 from 88, data showed.
