The European Union has said that it is "ready to impose restrictive measures against individuals who continue to engage in or provide support for acts that threaten peace, security and stability of Guinea-Bissau."

The sanctions threat was made by the bloc's Foreign Affairs Council at its meeting in Luxembourg on Monday.

EU Foreign Ministers strongly condemned the coup in Guinea-Bissau, and demanded the immediate re-establishment of the legitimate government, the completion of the interrupted democratic electoral process and the immediate restoration of constitutional order.

The EU made it clear that it would not recognize self-appointed transitional institutions, nor any kind of arrangement which would allow the armed forces to continue to threaten or control the civil powers. It rejected the establishment of a so-called "Transitional National Council."

The EU called for the immediate and unconditional release of those held in illegal detention and an end to violence and intimidation against political leaders and civil society representatives.

It wanted the freedom and security of all citizens to be ensured and perpetrators of human rights violations held accountable.

The EU acknowledged the decision of the African Union to suspend Guinea-Bissau, and firmly supported the efforts of the U.N., ECOWAS and CPLP to restore stability, democracy and respect for human rights there.

The military arrested Guinea-Bissau's interim President Raimundo Pereira and Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Junior during a coup last week. The coup leaders dissolved the Parliament and formed a National Transitional Council in Guinea-Bissau, one of the world's poorest countries.
