Opening statements in the trial of William Balfour, accused of killing the mother (Darnell Donerson), brother (Jason Hudson) and nephew (Julian King) of Jennifer Hudson, were given today (April 23).
Prosecutors were expected to say that Balfour, who is Hudson's former brother in law, was sent into a murderous rage after seeing a gift of balloons which he presumed to have been sent by the new boyfriend of Julia Hudson, Jennifer's sister.
Prosecutors then sketched out the alleged details of the murder: an enraged Balfour entered Donerson's home and shot her and Jason with a .45 caliber handgun. Balfour then stole Jason's SUV, abducting Julian in the process. They add that he shot Julian in the head before abandoning the vehicle.
There are no known witnesses to the killings and physical evidence has not yet been offered. The defense says that the prosecution's claims regarding Balfour are circumstantial.
