Finnish Jobless Rate Declines In March

Finland's unemployment rate decreased from last year in March, but exceeded economists' forecast, data released by Statistics Finland showed Tuesday.

The unemployment rate dropped to 8.5 percent in March from 9.3 percent in the same month last year. Economists were looking for an unemployment rate of 8.2 percent.

The number of unemployed persons in the country decreased to around 227,000 in March from about 245,000 a year earlier.

Meanwhile, the employment rate rose to 67.6 percent during the month from 66.4 percent in March 2011. There were around 2.43 million employed persons in Finland in March, higher than 2.39 million recorded a year earlier.

The labor force participation rate was 65.3 percent in March, compared to 64.9 percent recorded a year earlier, the agency said.
