France Consumer Confidence Rises For Second Month

French consumer confidence unexpectedly increased in April, rising for a second consecutive month to its highest level in 17 months, data released by INSEE showed Tuesday.

The seasonally adjusted consumer confidence indicator rose to 88 from March's 87. Economists had expected the index to remain unchanged. The latest score is the highest since November 2010, when it was 91.

Despite the improvement, the index remains below its long-term average, the statistical office said.

In the latest survey, significant improvement was seen in households' view on their ability to save. The corresponding index rose to -8 from -12. Saving intentions for the next 12 months also increased markedly, with the index rising to 33 from 22.
