The Governor of Japan's Fukushima prefecture will visit the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to ask it to establish an office in the prefecture to help with the aftermath of the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.
Yuhei Sato will visit the U.N. Nuclear watchdog's headquarters in the Austrian capital Vienna in August to meet the Agency's Director-General Yukiya Amano. The visit follows his meeting with IAEA experts in Fukushima city in October last, Japanese media reports said on Tuesday.
Sato requested them to establish a local office to assist the prefecture in the disaster response and decontamination work. The Governor also wants to ensure that the IAEA and the Japanese government cooperate in holding an international conference on nuclear safety to be held in Fukushima in December.
Prefecture officials say the assistance of IAEA experts is essential for dismantling the tsunami-wrecked reactors and and minimizing radiation effects.
Fukushima prefecture aims to help create a society that does not rely on nuclear energy, the reports said.
