President Barack Obama leads likely Republican nominee Mitt Romney by 9 percentage points in New Hampshire, a new poll says.

The WMUR Granite State Poll showed that 51 percent of likely New Hampshire voters said they will vote for Obama, while 42 percent said they will vote for Romney in a hypothetical general election matchup.

Obama holds a strong lead among Democrats, with 92 percent support, while Romney's lead among Republicans is somewhat smaller at 86 percent, according to the poll.

Independents in New Hampshire currently favor Obama by 40 percent to 35 percent.

"The Republican nomination process has weakened Romney in his backyard," said Andrew Smith, Director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center. "He will have to consolidate support in New Hampshire and other battleground states if he hopes to defeat Obama in November."

Additionally, the poll found that Obama's job approval ratings have stabilized and there is a sense in New Hampshire that the country is beginning to get back on track.

The poll, conducted by the UNH Survey Center, surveyed 538 adults between April 9th and 20th and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.

The results include a subsample of 486 likely general election voters that has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.
