At least 70 people, including women and children, were killed in an attack on a building in Syria's central city of Hama on Thursday, media reports citiing activists said.

While activists said the explosion was caused by government shelling, Syria's state media said the blast hit a house used as a bomb factory by "armed terrorist groups."

They said several houses in the Masha at-Tayyar district in southern Hama were also destroyed in the massive explosion.

The Opposition Syrian National Council has called for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council to adopt a resolution on protecting civilians in the restive Middle East country.

Hama, a hotbed of revolt in the year-long uprising against President Bashar al-Assad's rule, has a small team of U.N. observers who are preparing the way for a larger U.N. mission to monitor the peace plan negotiated by U.N.-Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan two weeks ago.
