Vice President Joe Biden took aim at presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's approach to foreign policy in a speech at New York University on Thursday.
Biden accused Romney of looking backward with regard to foreign policy, saying the former Massachusetts Governor would "return us to the past we have worked so hard to move beyond."
"In this regard, it is no different than what Governor Romney has proposed for our economy - taking us back to the failed policies that got us into the mess President Obama has dug us out of," Biden said, according to excerpts released by the Obama campaign.
The Vice President's speech accompanies the release of a new web video, which the Obama campaign said highlights Romney's weak foreign policy record.
The video contrasts statements by Romney and Obama, including Romney's recent characterization of Russia as the "number one geopolitical foe" of the U.S., which led to criticism from a variety of sources.
Biden referenced the remarks in his speech, claiming the Romney sees "the world through a Cold War prism that is totally out of touch with our times."
"Governor Romney is counting on our collective amnesia," Biden said. "But Americans know that we cannot afford to go back to the future."
Meanwhile, in an effort to highlight his foreign policy credentials, Romney released a statement announcing the support of former Secretary of Defense and National Security Advisor Frank Carlucci, who served under President Reagan.
"Governor Romney understands that America's future security depends on restoring our economy and maintaining a military and diplomatic posture that advances both American interests and American values," Carlucci said in the statement.
He added, "Indeed, in the tradition of Ronald Reagan, Governor Romney grasps the deep interconnection between the two."
Biden's attacks on Romney are just the latest sign that the general election is heating up now that Romney has all but secured the Republican nomination.
